Veterans Memorial Boulevard
Urban Garden & Bike Lanes

Urban Garden

Long standing blighted tennis courts have been removed from Veterans Memorial Boulevard to make way for more green space. Plans to install an Urban Garden are well underway.

This Urban Garden will include the addition of twenty-one native trees and over forty shrubs that will infiltrate storm water, improve air quality, and reduce ambient temperatures for this section of the city. This project was made possible by a grant through the CT Urban Forest Council provided by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Division of Forestry and funded by the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative.

Community Planting Day
In November 2022, volunteers helped usher in the next phase of the Urban Garden on Veterans Memorial Boulevard during  Community Planting Day. Landscape Gardener, Steven Schriver, led the group through a variety of plantings including trees, shrubs, and prepping the garden for Spring.
The grand opening of the garden will be spring 2023!

Bike Lanes

A recent paving project made way for the addition of Bike Lanes on Memorial Boulevard! The community connectivity upgrade will result in new traffic patterns and drivers can expect to see new directional signals, road markings, and traffic signs. Memorial Boulevard will be a shared roadway, designed to offer a balanced and multimodal transportation system. Benefits to the new roadway configuration include connectivity of local bike infrastructure, traffic calming, increased safety and walkability for pedestrians, and overall healthier community environment.
